Professor Julie Chan received her PhD degree in Neuroscience from Washington State University, in the field of central neural control of cardiovascular functions. Following one year post-doctoral training at the same university, she returned to Taiwan in 1990 to join the Department of Medical Education and Research at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital as a principal investigator and was promoted to senior (professorial) principal investigator in 1996. In 1998, she moved to the Veterans General Hospital in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where she served as the Head of Basic Medical Research Division from 2008-2011. In April 2011, Julie moved to Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, where she is currently a Chair Professor and senior principal investigator in the Institute for Translational Research in Biomedicine. From 2012-2017, Julie was the Director of the Department of Medical Research in the same hospital.
Professor Chan’s laboratory has a long-standing research interest in brain stem cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms. Her current research interest focuses on molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying oxidative stress-mediated cardiovascular disorders, particularly with reference to neurogenic hypertension. Her research interests also include neural mechanism in diabetes associated-hypertension, developmental programming of adult health and disease, trauma-associated dysfunction of autonomic nervous system and mitochondrial dysfunction in pathogenesis of hypertension. Professor Chan has received the Outstanding Research Award (2004-2007, 2009-2012, 2012-2015) from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan for her eminent research accomplishment in the field of cardiovascular physiology.
Julie Chan is currently the President of International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) (2017-2021). She has served as a regional representative to the International Society of Autonomic Neuroscience (2000-2003), a member of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) Neuroscience Program Network Committee (2006-2008) and IBRO Asian Pacific Regional Committee (2010-2016). She is also the Past President of the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Physiological Societies (2015-2019). In addition, Julie Chan is currently an Associate Editor of Journal of Biomedical Science and Biomedicine Hub, an Advisory Editor of Biochemical Pharmacology, a Reviewing Editor of Journal of Physiology, and an Editorial Board Member of several scientific journals, including Circulation Research and American Journal of Physiology, Circulatory and Heart Physiology.
